UCL, situated in the heart of London, is one of the UK’s foremost universities. Founded in 1826, UCL was the first university to admit students who had previously been excluded from education on the grounds of their religious or social background; it was also the first to admit women on equal terms with men some years later.

Today, we are still a vigorous and forward-looking institution – a global leader in generating new knowledge, with a formidable reputation for the quality of our teaching and research. This is reflected by UCL's excellent performance in the latest (2014) Research Excellence Framework, where we were rated top university in the UK for research strength. Our students benefit from this by being taught by people who are actively engaged in making advances in their subject area, be that in the sciences, engineering and medicine or the arts, humanities and social sciences.

UCL provides an environment that encourages students to be ambitious yet idealistic. Our students participate in thousands of hours of voluntary work each year, are members of a huge range of clubs and societies, and benefit academically from UCL’s excellent staff:student ratio.

Our excellent Careers Service helps to prepare our students for life in the working world, and UCL is the seventh highest rated university in Europe for employability (QS Graduate Employability Rankings 2017). Our prominent London location means that we occupy a central place in one of the great cities of the world, geographically, culturally and intellectually.
